N.S.W. Highlanders is a representative pipe band operated by a co-operative of community bands. (mainly those that do not compete.) The aim of the co-operative is to give pipers and drummers of NSW, whether experienced or learning, the opportunity to compete regularly in Australian pipe band competitions and compete in the World Pipe Band Championships every three years. The NSW Highlanders is outfitted in an independent uniform; wearing the 'NSW Scottish Rifle Regimental tartan' of 1885. pictured right.
Brief History Members from community bands united in early 2007 to compete in the 2008 World Championships. The band competed as “N.S.W. Highlanders” under the umbrella of Wingham Services Club Pipes & Drums association with the support of Coffs Coast Pipes & Drums. In 2009, looking to offer many more pipers and drummers the opportunity to compete and experience the Worlds, the “N.S.W. Highlanders Pipe Band” was incorporated as an independent association and the band registered with the APBA in 2010. The new team competed in its first competition, the 2010 N.S.W. State Championships at Castle Hill, and was placed 2nd in grade 4B

The band also competed at the 2011 MacLean Gathering and the Hawkesbury Nepean Valley Mini Band contest before competing in the 2011 World Pipe Band championships. See Worlds Team for more about the Worlds experience and your opportunity to join our 2014 Worlds Team.
NSW Highlanders Pipe Band offers pipers & drummers the opportunity to participate in pipe band competitions including the World Pipe Band Championships while still remaining active in their local pipe band. Pipers, drummers and bands are welcome to join the co-operative at anytime and play an equal and active role in the further development of the NSW Highlanders. Help us help each other and together our community bands can look forward to ● satisfying the varying ambitions of members ● encouraging new members ● meeting a wider group of like-minded people ● the opportunity to compete including the World Pipe Band Championships ● a support network of bands ● greater opportunity to participate in special events
The NSW Highlanders concept is different, even unique in some ways as we seek recognition and benefits for all bands involved. We are no stranger to many, many questions. Contact us for more information or to arrange a meeting with a band representative in your area.
“Having members of Coffs Coast Pipes & Drums compete with the NSW Highlanders has been a positive move for our band. It has increased the overall quality of the band through the experience they gain” Pipe Sergeant Jeanette Baldwin, Coffs Coast Pipes & Drums
